FUNCTIONS OF TRACKBALL
  • A trackball is a pointing device consisting o f a ball housed in a socket containing sensors to detect rotation of the ball about two axes-like a n upside- down mouse with an exposed protruding ball.
  • The user rolls the ball with the thumb fingers, or the palm of the hand to move a cursor.
  • Large tracker balls are common CAD workstations for easy precision. Before the advent of the touch-pad, small trackballs were common on portable computers, where there may be no desk space on which to run a mouse.
  • Some small thumb-balls clip into the side of the keyboard and have integral buttons with the same function as mouse buttons.
  • The trackball was invented by Tom Cranston and Fred Longstaff as part of the Royal Canadian Navy's DATAR system in 1952, eleven years before the mouse was invented.
  • The first trackball used a Canadian five-pin bowling ball.

HOW TO USE TRACKBALL?

ADVANTAGES OF TRACKBALL
  • The trackball mouse allows manipulation of the cursor without requiring the movement of the actual mouse itself.
  • This reduces the users strain to wrists, hands, arms and shoulders that can be experienced using a traditional mouse.
  • The user can also operate the buttons more easily without accidentally moving the pointer itself.
  • This can be of great advantage those with impaired mobility.
  • The design of the trackball mouse means that less desk space is required to operate the pc, meaning the cursor can be moved with the actual mouse positioned anywhere.
  • This can be handy for example if you have limited desk space, or need to operate a device wireless from a chair.
  • Most trackball mice come in symmetrical design meaning they can be used by both left or right handed users.
  • The majority are also compatible with both Mac and PC

DISADVANTAGES OF TRACKBALL
  • Given that users are controlling the cursor with a ball, movements are not completely precise.
  • For designers and those who work in graphics, the customary mouse may have greater accuracy.
  • The ball mechanism requires more cleaning and maintenance than a regular mouse.
